The bifurcation of the Class X Sanskrit syllabus for the academic session 2026-2027 was decided in a meeting held at STS School AMU, Aligarh on 24.03.2026. The curriculum utilizes two primary textbooks: शेमुषी द्वितीयो भागः (Shemushi Dwitiyo Bhagah) for literature, and व्याकरणवीथिः (Vyakarana Vithi) for grammar. It is divided across Three Periodic Tests (20 marks each, reduced to 10) and a comprehensive Annual Examination (80 marks).

Sanskrit is one of the most scoring subjects in Class X if you focus heavily on its mathematical-like grammar rules. The syllabus elegantly divides the Shemushi literature book alongside structural grammar from Vyakarana Vithi.
During your Periodic Tests, literature always carries 12 marks and grammar carries 8 marks. Notice how the grammar progresses logically: PT1 introduces basic Noun/Verb forms (Shabd & Dhatu Roop), PT2 shifts to phonetics and definitions (Varna & Sangya), and PT3 moves into application with Compounds (Samas) and Letter Writing. Master these in phases, as they all combine in the final exam.
The Annual Examination (80 marks) is where you need a comprehensive strategy. The literature portion holds 50 marks, dominated by Contextual Explanation (सदर्भ प्रसंग व्याख्या) for 21 marks and Q&A for 15 marks. Do not neglect the 30-mark Grammar section! The final exam specifically asks for an Essay (लेख) on Student Life, Environment, or the Importance of Sanskrit, alongside a Leave Application letter. Memorize these formats to secure easy marks.
How to Excel in Sanskrit
A strategic approach to grammar memorization and literature.
Memorize the ‘Roops’
Shabd Roop and Dhatu Roop are non-negotiable. Write out the declension tables for terms like Muni, Mata, Asmad, Yusmad repeatedly until they become muscle memory.
Master Sandhi Rules
The Annual Exam explicitly tests Vyanjan Sandhi (Consonant Sandhi) rules like Stutva and Torli. Understand the rule rather than cramming examples.
Format the Patram
Letter writing (रचना प्रयोग पत्रम्) is explicitly tested. Memorize the format for a Leave Application (अवकाक्षाप्राप्तये) and a Fee Concession (शुल्कक्षापनार्थ) letter.
Prepare the Essays
You are guaranteed an essay (लेख) on one of three topics: Student Life, Environment, or Importance of Sanskrit. Prepare 10 flawless Sanskrit sentences for each.
Contextual Explanation
21 marks in the Annual Exam are dedicated to Reference to Context (सदर्भ प्रसंग व्याख्या). Practice writing the context (Prasang) clearly before translating the verses.
Learn the Avyayas
Avyayas (Indeclinables) are an easy way to score marks in PT3 and the Annual Exam. Memorize the list of 1 to 20 Avyayas and their usage in a sentence.
