First Periodic Test
Class X — Chemistry
| Name of the Chapter & Activities | Question Pattern | Marks |
|---|---|---|
|
Ch 1: Chemical Reactions and Equations Activity: Performing and observing the following reactions (Demonstration as per NCERT book):
For Visually Challenged Students:
| Evaluated as an Assignment-Based test. | 06 |
| Total Marks (Reduced Marks: 03) | 06 | |
🧪 Practical Core
The First Periodic Test is uniquely assignment-based, focusing intensely on practical demonstrations of the four core types of chemical reactions.
👁️ Inclusivity
Visually challenged students are accommodated with specific focus areas: identifying Exothermic and Endothermic reactions.
Second Periodic Test
Class X — Chemistry
| Name of the Chapter & Activities | Question Pattern | Marks |
|---|---|---|
|
Ch 2: Acids, Bases and Salts Activity-1: To study the physical and chemical properties of (i) Acids (ii) Bases on the basis of their reactions with:
Activity-2: To identify the pH of given salts, by using Litmus indicator – Sodium Chloride, Ammonium Chloride and Sodium Acetate. For Visually Challenged Students: To identify edible acids and bases on the basis of their taste. |
• 2 questions of 1 mark (MCQ/VSA) • 2 questions of 1 mark (VSA) • 1 question of 2 marks (SA) | 06 |
| Total Marks (Reduced Marks: 03) | 06 | |
🔬 Acid/Base Testing
PT2 dives into properties of acids and bases. You must understand how they react with metals and carbonates, and how to test pH using Litmus.
📝 Exam Pattern Shift
Unlike PT1, this test is written, utilizing 1-mark (MCQ/VSA) and 2-mark (SA) questions to evaluate your understanding of the activities.
Third Periodic Test
Class X — Chemistry
| Name of the Chapter & Activities | Question Pattern | Marks |
|---|---|---|
|
Ch 3: Metals and Non-Metals Activity: To study the following properties of Acetic Acid (Ethanoic Acid):
For Visually Challenged Students: To identify Ethanoic Acid through its odour. |
• 2 questions of 1 mark (MCQ/VSA) • 2 questions of 1 mark (VSA) • 1 question of 2 marks (SA) | 06 |
| Total Marks (Reduced Marks: 03) | 06 | |
Syllabus Note: Although Chapter 3 is titled “Metals and Non-Metals”, the prescribed activity specifically focuses on the properties of Acetic/Ethanoic Acid.
Annual Examination
Class X — Chemistry
| Chapter Name | Weightage Breakdown | Total |
|---|---|---|
| Ch 01: Chemical Reactions and Equations | MCQ/VSA: 1, VSA: 2, SA (3 Marks): 1 | 06 |
| Ch 02: Acids, Bases and Salts | MCQ/VSA: 2, VSA: 2, SA (2 Marks): 1 | 06 |
| Ch 03: Metals and Non-Metals | MCQ/VSA: 1, SA (2 Marks): 1, LA (4 Marks): 1 | 07 |
| Ch 04: Carbon and its Compounds | MCQ/VSA: 1, VSA: 1, SA (2 Marks): 1, SA (3 Marks): 1 | 07 |
| Annual Exam Total Marks (12 Questions) | 26 | |
Important Notes on Paper Pattern:
- Total number of questions = 12.
- Question No. 1 comprise of 05 parts.
- Choice to be given in long answer question.
- Additional Internal Assessment: Subject Enrichment marks: 1.5 | Note Book marks: 1.5.
A Word from the Teacher
The Class X Chemistry syllabus is deeply rooted in laboratory activities. Simply memorizing theories will not be enough; you must understand the practical applications and observations of the reactions.
For your Periodic Tests, note the heavy emphasis on activities. PT1 is an assignment based on reaction demonstrations. PT2 requires you to know exactly how Litmus and Zinc react with acids and bases. In PT3, ensure you memorize the odour and solubility properties of Ethanoic Acid. Visually challenged students must prepare their specific taste, odour, and heat-based identification methods.
The Annual Examination carries 26 marks out of the total Science paper. Chapters 3 (Metals) and 4 (Carbon) hold slightly more weight (7 marks each). Pay close attention to Question 1, which will feature 5 separate parts, heavily testing your foundational concepts through MCQs and very short answers.
How to Excel in Chemistry
A strategic approach to activities, equations, and the annual exam structure.
Balance the Equations
For Chapter 1 (6 marks), practice writing and balancing chemical equations for all four major reaction types daily.
Focus on Activities
Direct questions will be asked from NCERT activities. Understand the color changes with Litmus and gas evolutions (e.g., Zinc + Acid).
Target the Long Answer
The only 4-mark Long Answer question in the Annual Exam comes from Chapter 3 (Metals and Non-Metals). Prepare detailed answers for extraction and properties.
Master Carbon Compounds
Chapter 4 carries 7 marks but has no Long Answer. Focus on drawing electron dot structures and understanding functional groups for the 2 and 3-mark questions.
Prepare for Q1
Question 1 in the Annual Exam has 5 parts. This means you must have a strong grasp of 1-mark concepts (MCQ/VSA) across the entire syllabus.
Secure Internal Marks
Maintain your practical files and class notebooks meticulously to secure the 1.5 Subject Enrichment and 1.5 Note Book marks.
