Class XII Elective English Unit Test syllabus prescribed by the Directorate of School Education, Aligarh Muslim University.
The Directorate of School Education, A.M.U. has issued the Unit Test-wise syllabus for Class XII Elective English (12E005) for the academic session 2026–27. The curriculum is divided across three unit tests, deeply focusing on grammar, writing skills, poetry, short stories, non-fiction, and a designated project/viva component in Unit Test III.

Project & Viva Only: Unit Test III for Elective English is entirely evaluated via a Project/Assignment (15 marks) and a Viva (10 marks). Students should center their research on the designated Drama (Chandalika), Novel, and Non-fiction piece.
A Word from the Teacher
Elective English demands a deep appreciation of literature and strong expressive writing abilities. Unlike English Core, the texts here—ranging from Blake’s poetry to Amartya Sen’s ‘The Argumentative Indian’—require critical thinking and thematic analysis.
For Unit Test I and II, do not just memorize summaries. The inclusion of Unseen Poems and Case-based Factual Passages means you must develop active reading strategies. When practicing Writing (Article, Essay, Speech, Report), always adhere to the formal structural conventions expected at the Class XII level.
Unit Test III is crucial. Because it relies entirely on a Project/Assignment (15 Marks) and a Viva (10 Marks), you must thoroughly understand ‘Chandalika’ and ‘Why The Novel Matters’. Be prepared to answer probing questions during your Viva to demonstrate genuine comprehension of the texts.
How to Excel in Elective English

Practice writing Speeches, Reports, Articles, and Essays with proper introductions and conclusions.
