HOW TO STUDY HISTORY

How to Prepare for Class 12 History

History is not simply a subject of remembering dates and names. It requires you to understand events, examine historical sources, compare different accounts and explain how and why changes took place. A good preparation plan should include the following:

01. Read the NCERT Textbook

Read every chapter carefully. Pay attention to headings, source extracts, illustrations, maps and the questions at the end of each chapter.

02. Understand Historical Sources

Learn how historians use inscriptions, coins, manuscripts, travel accounts, official records and archaeological remains to reconstruct the past.

03. Prepare Timelines

Make short timelines of important rulers, battles, movements, administrative changes and historical events.

04. Practise Map Work

Locate important historical sites, cities, kingdoms, centres of rebellion and places associated with the freedom movement.

05. Practise NCERT Questions

Write answers in your own words. Support your points with relevant examples and information from the textbook.

06. Test Yourself with MCQs

Attempt chapter-wise objective questions. Review incorrect answers and return to the relevant textbook section.

FROM THE TEACHER’S DESK

Teacher’s Insight: What Makes a Good History Answer?

In my experience of teaching Humanities students, one common problem is that students often know the facts but do not organise them properly in their written answers. They may remember a ruler’s name, a historical event or a date, yet fail to explain its importance.

A good History answer should do more than repeat information from the textbook. It should show that you understand the historical event and can explain it with suitable facts and examples.

Here are five suggestions for students:

  • Begin with a direct answer. Do not write a long introduction before addressing the question.
  • Arrange your points logically. Use a clear sequence when explaining causes, events, developments or results.
  • Use historical terms correctly. Words such as zamindar, silsila, inscription, colonialism and nationalism have specific meanings.
  • Use examples from NCERT. Mention relevant places, people, sources and events to support your explanation.
  • Answer according to the question. A question asking you to explain causes needs a different response from one asking you to describe features or examine consequences.

My advice is simple: read the textbook, understand the evidence, practise writing and revise regularly. Do not depend only on memorised answers. A student who understands the chapter can write a better answer even when the question is framed differently.
